Staying focused. This is golden rule #2 for quality professionals. Work places overflow with opportunities for improvement. In best cases, enough resources exist to tackle all opportunities. But we know that resources never match the problems so it is critical to focus on the vital few opportunities for improvement. What cause of scrap do we eliminate first? What suppliers do we focus on for development? Etc. Etc.
(Part of) The value of a quality professional involves keeping organizations focused. It doesn't take much for things to get chaotic. People start thinking and acting irrationally. Hasty decisions are made without regard for data. Corrective actions are taken without addressing the root cause. In the midst of chaos, someone needs to bring order to the masses. Get everyone focused on the vital few issues. Speak with data. Think rationally.
The pareto diagram is one of the greatest quality tools in existence. It sole purpose is to bring focus. It gets you to the vital few issues. It displaces chaos with order.
